Free Sewing Patterns for Knit Fabrics

These past few months I’ve been sewing non-stop.  I had a phase of lingerie projects, and now I’ve been sewing a lot of garments, many of them in knit fabrics.  Since I was sewing bags most of the time, I’m discovering a lot of great pattern designers.

Below is a roundup for FREE sewing patterns for knit fabrics. Many of them are not free on the designer websites, but I’ll share with you how you can get them free.

I’ve done  a few of these roundups recently.  For more free patterns check the articles:

Laundry Day Tee

The Laundry Day Tee is listed for $10, but you can get it FREE with a code from Love Notions Sewing Group in Facebook.  I discovered Love Notions recently and I’ve purchased a few of their patterns.  They also have patterns for men a kids.

I love their designs because they includes a large range of sizes  (XS-5X) and they have one pattern on sale every Friday.  They also offer discounts if you purchase more than $15.

I made the Tee of this pattern and it looked like a tent on me (not very flattering), but the dress version looks more fitted at the waist.  I have to try that one.

From their patters, I’ve sewn Rhapsody Blouse, Joggers using Allegro Bottoms Pattern, and 2 Tidal tops.  I’ve shared some pictures on my personal Instagram account.

Harper Classic Knit Cardigan and Duster

The Harper Knit cardigan and Duster is a Sinclair Patterns Design that you can download for free.

Sinclair Patterns have a lot of great designs.  I’ve sewn their Gaia Top and Adele knit boatneck top and love them both.  I recently purchased the Nyoka Knit Crossover top and dress and the Alana Knit princess seam dress with pockets.  Karina post reviews and tutorials of some Sinclair Patterns on her Youtube channel Lifting pins and Needles (Nyoka, Alana, Jakarta Shorts).  I enjoy watching Karina’s videos, she gives a lot of practical tips and tutorials on many different patterns.

Lago Tank by Itch to Stich

Itch to Stich has become my favorite pattern company! Their patterns are so pretty and the fit is always great!  Their woven patterns have cup sizes and that is a huge plus.  Kennis released her book Sew Beautiful, which includes 8 beautiful patterns.  During this pandemic, I’ve sewn multiple of their patterns (to many to list) and I’m always very pleased. One of my favorites is their Causeway Bomber Jacket.

Lago Tank is one of her free patterns and it is for simple and easy to sew tank.  Is a basic and simple pattern that you can always use when you have extra knit fabric. I made one that I’ve wear a lot, and definitively will sew more of these.

I also found a free download of Itch to Stitch Melrose Top on Love Sewing.  This one is not for knits, it is a simple woven top that you can use to add many details (a blank canvas as Karina says in her video).  To download the pattern, you’ll need to be subscribed to Love Notions website.  This pattern is not free on the Itch to Stitch website, but you’ll also get the dress version.

Lindy Petal Skirt by Itch to Stich

Another free pattern from Itch to Stich is the Lindy Petal Skirt. Lindy Petal Skirt is a simple knit pencil skirt with an elastic waistband. It features two overlapping curved front panels that resemble two petals.

I made one Lindy Petal Skirt and I’m very pleased with it.  Another skirt pattern for knits that has many different variations is their Balboa skirt.  I made the one with 2 layers.

Karina also has videos on the Lindy Petal Skirt and Balboa Skirt Patterns. You’ll be inspired!

Style Arc Monthly Free Pattern

Not a specific pattern but I wanted to mention another company that I’ve used this year, Style Arc.  Style Arc is a pattern company from Australia and has many beautiful options for knits (and also wovens).  Their limitation is that when you purchase any of their pattern you get 3 sizes: the size you choose, and the sizes above and below your selection.

Every month they have 2 free patterns and you can choose any of them with any purchase. I wanted to share it because I didn’t know this the first time I purchased a pattern for them.

One of my favorite Instagram sewing accounts is Birdy Sew Obsessed.  She post pictures of many different pattern companies, but I’ve noticed that Style Arc seem to be one of her favorites.  Take a look of her feed.  She has so many beautiful pieces.
